How to Choose the Right MPO Patch Cords: A Practical Guide

Choosing the right MPO patch cord depends on fiber count, cable type, polarity, and jacket material. This guide helps data center professionals select suitable configurations for current and future needs, ensuring efficient, scalable, and standards-compliant fiber optic deployments.

2024-11

As network speeds increase and data center architectures become more complex, MPO patch cords have become essential components for high-density fiber optic infrastructure. However, not all MPO cables are the same — and choosing the right one can make a significant difference in performance, cost, and future scalability.

1. Fiber Count (12, 24, or 48 cores)

The most common MPO cables come in 12-fiber and 24-fiber configurations.

  • 12-fiber MPO: Common for 40G (4x10G) or 100G (10x10G) networks.

  • 24-fiber MPO: Used in 100G, 200G, and 400G deployments with parallel optics (8x25G or 16x25G lanes).

  • 48-fiber MPO: Suitable for ultra-high-density trunk cables, such as in hyperscale data centers.

2. Multimode or Singlemode?

  • Multimode (OM3/OM4/OM5): For short-reach, high-speed links (up to 150–400 meters).

  • Singlemode (OS2): Best for long-distance applications (up to 10 km).

Use color-coded jackets (Aqua for OM3/OM4, Lime for OM5, Yellow for OS2) to avoid confusion during installation.

3. Polarity Type (A, B, or C)

Polarity defines how transmit and receive signals align between devices:

  • Type A (straight-through)

  • Type B (reversed pairs)

  • Type C (pairwise flipped)

4. Cable Construction & Jacket Type

  • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Ideal for indoor environments

  • OFNP: Plenum-rated, used in air-handling spaces

  • Armored: For high-traffic or harsh settings

Also consider round vs flat cable shape for routing needs.

Final Tips

  • Use factory-terminated MPO jumpers for consistent performance

  • Look for IL/RL test results and 3D interferometry data

  • Plan for modular upgrades using MPO cassettes
