MPO connectors are widely used in duplex fiber applications within data centers, enabling pre-terminated plug-and-play trunk cables for faster deployment, easier cable management, and reduced pathway space compared to individual duplex cables. In duplex backbone links, 12-fiber or 24-fiber MPO trunk cables form permanent connections, transitioning to 6 or 12 duplex connectors via MPO-to-LC cassettes or hybrid patch cords.

MPOs are also essential for parallel fiber applications that boost transmission speeds by using multiple fibers. Initially adopted for 40GBASE-SR4 and 100GBASE-SR4, which utilize 8 fibers (4 transmitting, 4 receiving at 10/25 Gbps per lane), MPOs have evolved with encoding advancements. Today, 8-fiber MPOs support 200G and 400G (50/100 Gbps per lane), while 16-fiber MPOs enable 800G (8 transmit, 8 receive at 100 Gbps). With 200 Gbps per lane technology, 800G can also run on 8-fiber MPOs, and 1.6T is supported via 16-fiber MPOs (8 transmit, 8 receive at 200 Gbps).

MPO breakout cables, featuring an MPO connector on one end and duplex connectors on the other, optimize switch port density and utilization in high-speed-to-lower-speed connections. For example, a single 100G switch port with an 8-fiber MPO can link to four 25G servers, enhancing cost efficiency and scalability.
